In this interview, she shares her journey ideas and advice for beginners who want to grow as a leader.

Inspiration For Dame Neslyn Watson

In 1989, my manager told me I was “threatening” because I was black, a woman, and intelligent, and she planned to block my progress. That moment gave me a choice to accept limitations or build something of my own. So I chose the second one. I started coaching others and helping organisations to become fair and strong. I also wanted to prove that leadership should be based on talent, values, and not physical appearance. And that experience taught me the power of standing in unfair situations and using our leadership powers with courage and honesty.

Leadership Background of Dame Neslyn Watson

Dame Neslyn Watson

I was born in Jamaica and grew up with strong family values. I studied psychology and learned how people think, feel, and lead. So, my study has enabled me to become a better coach. I also study and took training to stay sharp in business and leadership. I have learnt that leadership means showing up fully, listening well, and guiding with care. My roots, both personal and professional, also help me to bring both heart and skills to leadership.

Purpose of Beacon Organisational Development

Beacon organisational development is created to think of the people first. We help companies to improve their leadership, grow strong cultures, and manage changes. What makes us unique is that we listen to people deeply. We do not give cookie-cutter answers. We always use service interviews and workshops to understand each team’s progress and needs. And then we’ll find solutions together. From helping the UK government’s civil servants to lead better to supporting companies through digital change, we focus on results. We also care about people feeling valued and able to lead with confidence.

Motivation Behind the Journey – Dame Neslyn Watson

The motivation behind my journey is seeing others grow through my coaching. When I coach someone and they find their voice, their strength, or their dream, that is priceless for me. I also deeply believe in fairness and kindness. Knowing that my system and beliefs help others to grow is a motivation that drives me. I also think about young people watching, especially women and people from different backgrounds. So, I want to know that they belong at the top and they can win anything they want. Also, helping others lead with purpose fills me with energy. Leadership is not just a job, but it’s a calling, and I am proud to live it every day.

Empower to Lead – Dame Neslyn Watson

We need to show that leadership is for everyone. People may need to see role models whose journey started like that of an ordinary man or woman. Confidence always comes with support and the right guidance. Also, appreciating the small efforts of people and giving them real chances to share ideas will help them to grow. Companies will also need to break down their unfair barriers and have to build fair systems that are equal for everyone. People also need to understand that failure is part of growth. Let current leaders lead with humility and kindness, and this inspires others to follow. So when people see that leadership changes lives and make a real impact, they also feel the call to rise too.

Impact on Society

My coaching has helped leaders become more inclusive and thoughtful. I have also worked with government leaders, hospitals, charities, and global companies. So many times I have seen people grow more confident and become more fair-minded. I also help leaders to become more open, more equal, and more united. Also, I supported young professionals from underrepresented backgrounds, showing them they belong in leadership, too. I have also believed in creating workplaces that work for everyone and in building leaders who care about both performance and people.

Advice to Future Leaders

Be yourself. Never stop learning keeps you flexible and strong. Now, challenges will come, but address those challenges with kindness, compassion, fairness and dignity. Knowing what your purpose and clear mission are will also mean you make better decisions. They will also guide your actions. Also, try to build good relationships with others and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Take risks where needed.

Moreover, stay kind and honest to yourself even when it’s hard. Always support and help others to grow.
